The climate bonus will be paid out again today, but it will bring in far less money than last year. Instead of 500 euros, this time, one will receive, depending on the region, 110 to 220 euros. Viennese, for example, will receive the least since, according to the federal government’s explanation, they could fall back on public transportation. On the other hand, municipalities with only “basic public transport facilities” will receive the maximum amount. In total, these are 1,498 municipalities.

How high the climate bonus is depends on where you live; Statistics Austria made the regional categorization. The highest climate bonus of 220 euros is available in rural communities with only “basic public transport facilities,” which are 1,498 of 2,093 communities this year. This is where about a third of the population lives. About one-fifth of the people in Austria receive the second-highest bonus (185 euros), and another third receive 150 euros. Most large cities, such as Graz, Linz, and Salzburg, fall into this category, as does the surrounding area of Vienna. A differentiation was also made within Vienna: In the large-area districts of Liesing, Donaustadt, Floridsdorf, Währing, and Döbling, all adults receive 150 euros. On the other hand, all other Viennese have to make do with the minimum amount of 110 euros.

With the new Website Tool under klimabonus.gv.at/kontakt/, one can inquire about the individual amount of this year’s “Klimabonus”. For the 2023 climate bonus, 8,574,541 people are eligible during the year. Of these, 7,490,914 people should receive their climate bonus directly to their accounts, and 1,083,627 people should receive their climate bonus by mail. The climate bonus in voucher form can be redeemed at thousands of stores or exchanged for cash at the bank partner bank99. Those who moved out or moved in during the year’s first half will not receive their climate bonus until spring 2024.

Payment. By the end of October, the funds will have been transferred or mailed. It is intended to cushion the higher CO2 tax. The climate bonus “ensures that climate-friendly behaviour pays off,” says Minister Leonore Gewessler. The climate bonus will cost around 1.47 billion euros this year.
